Autism Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition which usually becomes evident in childhood and affects individuals in their communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. Asperger’s Syndrome was a term formerly used for individuals with what is thought to be the mildest form of autism. The term Autism Spectrum Disorder reflects that ASD is very diverse, and can look much different in different individuals.

Autism spectrum disorders affect three main areas of a child's life:

  • Social interaction
  • Communication — verbal and nonverbal
  • Restricted behaviors and interests

Each child with an ASD may have a different pattern of autism.

Early diagnosis is important. This is because early treatment can help a child with ASD make significant gains in language and social skills.
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome often struggle to understand and relate to other people and to their environment and this can result in extreme behavior, which can be seen as tantrums in children or rudeness in adults. Further, they may experience other  emotional problems such as anxiety or depression.
